Connect a softphone app to your extension so you can make and receive calls and texts on your mobile or computer. We recommend Groundwire (iOS and Android) by Acrobits. Any standard SIP softphone works for calls.

What you need

Setting Value
Username Your extension number, e.g. 2001
Password Your extension's SIP password (from your administrator)
Domain / server Your company's server, e.g. voip.yourcompany.ca
Transport UDP
Port 5060

Groundwire

  1. Install Groundwire from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open it and choose Add account → Generic SIP account.
  3. Fill in:
    • Title: anything, e.g. Work
    • Username: your extension, e.g. 2001
    • Password: your SIP password
    • Domain: your server, e.g. voip.yourcompany.ca
  4. Tap Save. The account status should turn green / Registered within a few seconds.
  5. Allow Groundwire to use the microphone and to send notifications, so calls ring when the app is closed.
  6. Test it: dial *9196 (echo test). You should hear yourself back after a moment. Then call another extension.

Other SIP apps and desk phones

Use the settings in the table above. Most apps call them:

  • Username / User ID / Auth ID: your extension
  • Domain / Registrar / Proxy / Server: your company's server address
  • Password: your SIP password

Leave outbound proxy empty unless your administrator gives you one.

Check it's working

Test Dial Expected
Echo test *9196 You hear your own voice
Your voicemail *97 Asks for your PIN
Another extension e.g. 2000 It rings
An outside number e.g. 6135551234 It rings; they see your business number

Troubleshooting

  • Account won't register (stays red/grey)
    • Check the extension number, password and server address for typos.
    • The server is your company's address (voip.…), not an IP address.
    • Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some guest Wi-Fi networks block calling apps.
  • Calls connect but there's no sound one way
    • Turn Wi-Fi off and test on mobile data. If it works there, the Wi-Fi network is blocking voice traffic.
    • Report it with the time of the call. Your administrator can check the call in the system.
  • Calls don't ring when the app is closed
    • Allow notifications for Groundwire, and turn on Push notifications in the account settings.
    • On Android, exclude Groundwire from battery optimisation.
  • "Forbidden" or "403" when calling out
    • Your password is probably wrong, or your extension isn't allowed to dial that number. Contact your administrator.
